“Petal in the moonlight.” That’s what he called me once. But that’s later in the story. First I have to meet him at the bottom of a well. And kill creatures that would rather kill me. Leave my family and castle behind. Save the most magical treasure in our kingdom. Save my own future.
I’m a princess on a quest that was none of my choosing, but I’ll see it through. Because I’m no petal.

This is a fairytale fantasy about a young female protagonist who has a love for archery and a mind of her own. Her retelling of her royal quest to save a magical apple tree and discover her rightful place in a medieval kingdom brings out giants, dragons, cursed beasts, her flawed sisters, a little romance, and a lot of adventure. While an inescapable ever after waits for her with patience.

Petal A Retelling of My Inescapable Ever After eBook Emma Forgiven Reviews

This book was fantastic, a must read for everybody! The plot is pretty interesting, and I hope for a sequel!!
I really liked how the author decided to include other fairy tales like the golden apple, the glass mountain and others, not just beauty and the beast. I also liked *spoiler alert* the main character does not fall for the beast.
What a perfect find! Retellings aren't easy to pull off. Everybody knows the story but still wants to be entertained. This book gets it absolutely right. I was entertained through and through with enough twists to keep me on my toes!

Mainly because the princess, Dailerra, is the one retelling her personal story. So the book is not just a combination of a couple of stories I've heard before. It has tons of (to me) new material that takes the plot to a different level, to places I never saw coming. Especially at the very end where I actually loved being blindsided.

Dailerra herself is someone I'd like to meet in real life, someone I pretend to be. Mature, confident, spunky. She definitely handles men better than I usually do. And the men she meets on this journey would be nice to handle. I'm still trying to figure out if Raydon's my favorite, though. Royalty himself, he's the perfect gentleman and really cares for his princess to the point of instalove. (I mean, there's no getting away from it, "petal in the moonlight" is an adorable line.) But to me, the "monster" is the more interesting of the two. More unpredictable. There's undeniable chemistry between him and Dailerra, even though, technically, neither one is in love with the other.

I love that Dailerra's relationship with her sisters is realistic. Nobody I know is completely evil or pure angel. Neither are the sisters. Or anyone else in the book for that matter. In what's basically a magical kingdom, this keeps things more grounded and modern.

I also love that the world Emma Forgiven has created is both familiar and unique. The book gives (sometimes whimsical) hints at WHEN the story might be, but especially the "underworld" is a place unto itself filled with unexpectedly vivid imagery. Most of the description given as if incidental, accidental. So the reader never feels like she's being "told" anything but can see every delightful detail perfectly. It's unusual storytelling and very enjoyable.

I'm glad I was browsing with nothing to do. Now I have a book to go back to whenever I want to escape to that perfect spot in the universe.
